MISSION OUTREACH NEWS

FEBRUARY MISSION OUTREACH SUNDAY:  DRMM
The 102 year old local non-profit charity, the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries (DRMM), is the Mission Outreach donation recipient for February. Supporting the needy and homeless in Detroit for over one hundred years, the DRMM is an accredited Christian faith-based organization dedicated to supplying basic humanitarian needs and providing the necessary motivation for individuals to rebuild their lives.
In addition to supplying the basic needs of life, the DRMM shares the gospel of the love of Jesus Christ and brings hope to the despondent, disadvantaged and homeless men, women, and children in the Detroit area, “rebuilding the inner city, one life at a time”.  Their philosophy is to minister to the whole person in body, soul, and spirit, opening the opportunity to become a faithful Christian, immersed in a local church, rehabilitated, employed, and in a productive life in reunited families.
Some of the many DRMM programs for those in need are:

Community Services
Emergency Services
Transitional and Permanent Housing
Youth Camps and Recreation Services
Spiritual Life Services
Substance Abuse Treatment

Volunteers are also needed at the DRMM to lead or assist youth and adults in music, arts and crafts, and teaching skills.  Over the course of February, please help this worthy charity continue it’s great work in Detroit by donating in the Mission envelops in the church pews or designate the DRMM as a recipient on your offering envelopes.

MEN'S CLOTHING NEEDED

Crossroads has a dire need for men’s clothing:  Pants, long sleeve shirts, sweaters, socks and underwear.  Also, we are short on jackets and coats for men, women and children.  We have had to turn away a number of people who need these things for winter.  Please donate any used items that you no longer need.  Do not donate summer clothing at this time as Crossroads has limited space.  Save these items until spring. Thank you.

MUSIC NEWS

Songs of the Gypsy—Mezzo-Soprano Elizabeth Mitchell
St. John’s concert series friends may remember Utah native Elizabeth Mitchell from her performance as Fiordiligi in our 2010 presentation of Mozart’s opera Cosi fan tutte.  “Songs of the Gypsy" is a recital featuring Mitchell and pianist, Lydia Qiu.  This recital takes you into the heart of a gypsy camp by way of some of the world's best composers.  The program includes stunning gypsy music by Brahms, Verdi, Bizet, and Dvořák.  This recital will have your toes tapping and you humming the tunes for days to come!
A reception following this event will feature an art exhibit by Bev Cavallaro, a member of St. John’s.

Songs of the Gypsy
Sunday, February 5, 4:30 p.m.
Suggested donation:  $10 individuals; $25 families

Join the Handbell Choir
Our Handbell Choir will be looking for some new ringers to join us starting in January.  If you are an adult or a youth in grade 8 or above, and if you enjoy playing music and being part of a team, then consider joining us!  Ability to read music is helpful; we will teach you everything else.  Our rehearsals are held on Thursdays 6:00 pm to 7:15 pm.  For more information, contact Julie Ford at the church.

MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES

Acolytes - Crucifer and Luminary
We welcome you to become a part of St. John's Acolyte team.  The Acolytes serve at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. services each week, serving 1-2 Sundays a month.  Schedules go out every 3-4 months with Acolytes choosing which Sundays work best for them.
The Acolyte Ministry for the calendar year 2011 was strong.  We had some new Acolytes join our team this year:  Casey McCord, Maria McCord, and Theron Farmer.  Yeah!!   Also, a big thank you to the parents for getting your sons and daughters to church 15 minutess before the service.  Thank you to all of the Acolytes for your commitment to this wonderful ministry.  I would also like to thank Jerry Cuper for calling all the Acolytes for their weekly reminders.
We are in need of more Acolytes for the 11:00 service.  If you are interested, contact Lana Klosterman at 248-449-5059.

Are you interested in becoming a Eucharistic Visitor?
Bringing Private Holy Communion to the temporarily and permanently homebound is a caring and rewarding ministry.  New Eucharistic Visitors are always welcome!  Training can be scheduled on an individual or group basis and takes 1-1/2 to 2 hours.  In addition, the diocesan-sponsored Safeguarding God’s Family training is required to become a fully licensed EV Minister.  This training runs 4 hours and is offered at various churches in our diocese throughout the year.  If you feel that God may be calling you to this special ministry, please contact Becky Nickels at ranickels@wowway.com   or by phone on 734-981-6831.

Coffee Hour Help Needed
Coffee Hour is in need of volunteers in the New Year.  Sign up to host, to provide goodies, or both.  We welcome visitors, and each other, after both the 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. services.  You will find the sign-up sheet in the hall across from the mail slots.  (Remember that January 22 is the Annual Meeting and Potluck, so there is no "coffee hour" that day.)

WINTER BLOOD DRIVE FEBRUARY 6
Our Winter Red Cross Blood Drive is being held on Monday, February 6, 2012 from 1:OO p.m. to 7:OO p.m.  You can schedule an appointment online at https://www.givelife.org.  Whether you're a first timer or frequent donor, please plan to join us.  For any questions, please call Carolyn Liebau at 734-455-5395.  Drop-ins are also welcome.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY 25th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Over the past 25 years, Habitat Detroit has built approximately 300 new homes and rehabilitated two dozen homes spanning across five Detroit neighborhoods.  Please plan to join us for an evening of fun as we celebrate the stars of Habitat for Humanity Detroit before watching the live broadcast of the 2012 Oscars® from the luxury of the Max M. Fisher Music Center and Orchestra Hall.  Details here.

RANDY SINGS WITH THE DSO
St. John's office manager, Randy Gilchrist, as a member of the UMS Choral Union, will sing with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra on February 24 and 26.  The program includes John Adams' On the Transmigration of Souls and Johannes Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem).  Adams' Transmigration was composed in response to the events of 9/11.
This pairing of the much-loved Requiem and the contemporary Transmigration, both on the theme of death and resurrection, promises to be an inspiring experience.  Get tickets at www.dso.org.
